Goemon review

As soon as I learnt that this was by the same director that did "casshern" I had to see it. It is more of a straightforward story and easier to follow than Kazuaki Kiriya's other film and in many ways I would say that enjoyed this more. Based on a Japanese folk legend similar to the renowned tale of robin hood it is hard for me to talk about this movie without giving the plot away so all I will say is that the ninjas are in  town. The director uses his same striking colour pallet to set the tone of this film and as in "casshern"" the pop art scenery does do the it justice. The CGI is used sparsely in comparison and is necessary for the story telling. Although there is a two hour eight minute runtime at no point does the movie seem to drag and the viewer is sucked in to the story and starts to feel for the characters. I would warn anyone watching this that a few of the scenes are quite brutal and one particular scene had me cursing at the on-screen portrayal of brutality. You will be treated to many a dreamlike sequence of martial arts action but unlike other films you will not get tired of unnecessary war/fight scenes. Lastly I will say that films like this with a good story that will (hopefully) improve human relations are a rarity and should be made more often. A good watch.
