Screamers review

This film made me realize how impressionable I was in my school days. It also made me see how far special effects in movies have come nowadays and lastly it has hammered the realization of my age. Before I continue on with my review I would like to point out that this was a low budget sci-fi/horror movie even for it's time. Based on a short Philip K Dick story, it does a pretty decent job and comes out as a better film than some of the bigger budgeted movies I can name (cough cough...independence Day...cough cough). Starring an almost unknown cast aside from Peter Weller who's performance outshines the others; the elements of the original story can be found in other various sci-fi films from the era and even in some modern flicks which just goes to show how ahead of his time the author was. However, the film does have some subtle changes compared to the book out of which the most noticeable is the change of location. The whole idea of having killer robots to aid in humanity in its wars is in fact quite scary and seems so more in this move than later ones especially when (SPOILER ALERT) said robot is in the form of a child...genuinely creepy. The ending was left open ended to make way for a sequel but as there is no sequel to the book, I doubt that any sequel will do it justice. This is a thoroughly thought provoking film and is well deserving of a rental.
