I recently found this short within my books. It is just the first chapter but thought I'd post it here anyway. Judging by what kind of feedback I get (if any), I will consider revisiting and finishing the story. Sorry if there are any mistakes as I did write it ages ago like when I was between 14 and 16.
BLOOD TIES
Chapter 1
The leaves crunched under his feet as he ran blindly. He wondered if the monster was still on his trail. He came to a stop and tried to focus. It was eerily still and it was hard to see in the pitch black. Surely there should be some sort of sound, be it a cricket or some other form of wildlife. Not even the wind was stirring. Thankfully there wasn't even any evidence of the monster in pursuit. Drake Charles stood there in the darkness with all his senses alert for what seemed like an eternity. Just as his head began to throb with the effort, he heard a twig snap. He held his breath trying to become invisible but......SNAP! He took of with a burst of acceleration from where he knew not. How long had he been running? All he knew was that his lungs were on fire and he was about to pass out. Crunch....cruNCH...CRUNCH. His footsteps were too heavy and too loud; he needed to stop and listen for his pursuer. THUD...THUD...THUD. Now what? It took him a while to realise that it was his own heartbeat pounding in his head. He needed to calm down, slow his breathing and his heartbeat. Feeling about him, he found a tree trunk to lean against. Still vigilant of his surroundings, he closed his eyes and took slow deep breaths. Depriving himself of sight he could hear better or so he imagined. Silence once again...a bit too silent. How had it come to this? It had started out as a normal day for him: waking up at 6am, having breakfast at 7, kissing his wife goodbye before the long drive into town and to his mundane job as a store assistant manager. Yep, a normal day that is until he came home. The first unusual sign he noticed was that the lights of the house were not on as he drove up. There were no neighbours nearby so he couldn't dismiss it as Clara was not home and she didn't drive so shopping was out of the question. Second was that the front door was slightly ajar. That was when he was sure of something being amiss and went back to the car to get some kind of weapon. With lug wrench firmly in one hand and a flashlight in the other he slowly edged the front door open. First things first...he tried the light switch just inside the door but to no avail. Turning the torch on and flicking the light from right to left he noticed the glittering of glass and some dark stains on the carpet. Being careful not to step on the glass he followed the stained further into the kitchen. Here the floor was of white tiles and even in the torchlight he could tell the stained were deep crimson leading to his biggest fear.
