Southland tales review

I really don't know whether to like this film or hate it. One thing I will say is that this really gave me a headache not because it was boring but because I had to concentrate so much while watching it. After two viewings I still feel as if I have barely scratched its surface. Anyone who watches this film will have their own take on it and because of that it makes describing this movie very hard. My personal opinion of this film is that it is a mess when you initially watch it: you get the feeling like it's being pulled in too many directions. However, it may seem boring at first but just when you think of turning it off you see something that piques your interest and you sit back down and give it another chance. I watched this because it was from the same director as the excellent "Donnie Darko" which I enjoyed. Much like "Darko" it has many plot twists but unlike the previous film it doesn't draw you in but is content in holding the viewer at arms length. I did enjoy Dwayne "the rock" Johnson's performance in this as he was funny in places but as for the other actors, I didn't really know what to make of them.  "Southland tales" is a very original and ambitious film and there's no mistake about that and while it doesn't really come to the genius level of "Darko", the director does try hard making a very flawed but hugely entertaining film.

"The way the world ends.....not with a whimper, but with a bang".

That says it all right there. Further more for some this movie will be a whimper...or a bang. Go see it as it is something you will get to experience which doesn't come along very often.
