Blade runner 2049 review

The 1982 blade runner was nothing short of perfection and the sequel almost lives up to its predecessors legacy: why "almost" you ask? Well read on to find out. The original film was a dark film, gave the viewer a feeling of awe and  other mixed feelings. The imagery in the original was breathtaking and I am glad to report that the follow up does do justice in maintaining the darkness of the original alongside the beautiful imagery. However, there is a "but" and that is that it was not directed by Ridley Scott. Now before all of yous start to revolt, that isn't a necessarily bad thing...it still has one of the original writers at the helm and Denis Villeneuve wasn't a bad choice as director. Did I mention that this film is dark? Compare this to the original and this is almost pitch black (as if the original wasn't dark enough). Like the original, this also has a lot of strikingly beautiful and haunting imagery which is amplified even more by the masterfully done soundtrack by non other than Hans Zimmer. This also is an acquired taste as some of you will find this a really slow moving and boring movie whereas others will find a beautifully haunting and thought provoking film. I'll admit, it does seem slow to the uninitiated as it makes more sense if you have seen the first and original film as it does continue the story and in such a way that it ends up slotting neatly into place. This film (like the '82 original) does benefit from multiple viewings if only to see the things that you missed out on. Of course, I would recommend watching this on a big screen...in fact the bigger the better. As I didn't see it in IMAX; I have now purchased a ticket to do just that which is rare for me but such a visually striking film deserves the IMAX treatment. If you enjoyed the original "blade runner" then do go see this. A highly recommended film.
