Legend review

The notoriety of the Kray twins is legendary and so how appropriate that a film based on there life is named "legend". However, I found this film to be quite shallow...not a bad film just let down by some bad writing. To expand on this: Tom Hardy's excellent performance aside, this film doesn't really know what it wants to be; a docu-drama or a gangster movie. The voice over narration of the character Frances played by Emily Browning didn't help either and doesn't really make sense. Hardy is a bloody good actor and it shows but in some scenes of his portrayal of Ronnie Kray he just came off as "trying too hard". The Mafia aspects of the movie are not fleshed out enough as well as the theme of  rival gangs. What is told in (somewhat) depth is the relationship between Reggie and Frances but even that has its faults. All in all, an interesting film showcasing the sheer brutality of the Kray twins but not on par with the 1990 film "the Krays" (which I will revisit and review).
