The complex review

Unlike most mainstream Hollywood horror films that rely on jumpscares and/or gore, foreign films rely on acting and creepiness factor. Often a slow and patience testing build up of suspense before hitting the viewer with unrelenting images and sound effects; these films are an aquired taste...the only exception (in my opinion) "Carnival of souls". However, this film was not what I expected from the director Hideo Nakata of the "Ringu" fame. Not to say that this movie did not have an overly creepiness factor which it did have in spades in fact this movie hit most if not all the right notes of a horror movie. The acting was top notch and made the characters interesting and the building up of suspense and tension was what we have come to expect. Yes there are  a few CGI moments thrown in to keep up with the times but as they are done to keep the story moving and not for show it doesn't really take you away from the whole. What did disappoint me was the few scattered cheaply done jump scares but didn't take me away from enjoying the film completely just a minor inconvenience.  A good watch but not up to the standards set by Hideo Nakata's previous films.
