Been bitten by the
Korean bug again and watched this. Slow to start but when it gets
going, boy, does it get going. First things first: I'd like to
point out that the violence depicted in this movie is very realistic.
In other words it is not shown for the sake of being gratuitous,
quite the opposite as it is there raw and brutal unlike other films.
Also, there are two versions of this film; the UK/US version and the
proper international version. I say “proper” because watching the
HK legends release leaves big gaps in terms of story whereas the
international (or director's cut if you will) version adds a full 25
minutes to the runtime filling in the gaps of the story. I made the mistake of
watching the butchered HK legends version and ended up confused so
watched the international one which had more of an impact. Whoever
was hired to do the editing for the UK/US versions should be booted
from his or her job. By no means a terrible movie, just doesn't have
the impact of the international version. The characters start out as
people who you wouldn't care for but that changes half way through
the movie. Really enjoyed this and my only gripe would be that some
of the subtitles in the international version pass by too quick even
if you're a speed reader. A good watch but some scenes require you to
take into account the Korean culture to understand fully.
