Casshern review

As most of you know by now I am not a big CGI fan unless it is done properly and doesn't take away from the whole movie going experience then why did I enjoy "casshern" so much? Firstly it is a live action from the manga (or anime if you will) of the same name and secondly, the CGI, although silly in places: actually adds to the films nature and is not of over-the-top variety. Splitting the movie into beginning, middle and end, I would say that the stark contrast between colour and black and white in the opening minutes emphasizes the brutality seen by the main character. The rest of the film is just a visual assault on ones senses emulating into a surreal experience. Adding to this is the soundtrack which fits perfectly; a mix of operatic and techno beats. Yes, the story is ridiculous but is pulled of better than most but nowhere near the advertised "better than matrix" sales pitch. If you are going to see this at some point, I would like to say that it is not a very straightforward story and pretty hard to describe to a non-viewer. Best advice would be that a repeated viewing would make better sense of the somewhat muddled story and do take note that the action scenes are heavily influenced by anime. Disturbing and visually overpowering but an experience like no other. You need to go see this and will be thankful that you did.
