Basic instinct review

How does one begin to review what is arguably the most controversial movie of the 90's? Well I'm going to give it a try and heres my take of it. I love a "who dunnit" movie and although this was a risque film for me to watch and not as straightforward as others of its kind, I did enjoy it. As a mystery/suspense thriller it works pretty well but I think that if the body count had been less it would have made for a more suspenseful film. Yes there are sex scenes in it but compared to nowadays they are irrelevant. Directed by Paul Verhoeven of "robocop" fame this erotic thriller (yes that's what it is) is not for the faint of heart or mind and was pushing the limits of film making for its time. Nowadays films have too many rules and have to be made to specific guidelines. This is the one that made Sharon Stone into the star she is today and not forgetting her controversial interrogation scene.  Also of note is Michael Douglas's excellent driven performance. Similarities between this film and Hitchcock's "vertigo" are there for eagle eyed viewers to pick out with many a camera angles mimicking that of Hitchcock. Bottom line is that if you don't like erotic thrillers then give this one a miss but if you do enjoy thriller mysteries and are prepared to overlook certain bedroom antics then this is one enjoyable film and unmissable.
