Confucius review

Those of you that have been reading my reviews for awhile now know that I enjoy history lessons and this is yet another such a film. Based on the Chinese scholar Confucius's life rather than singling out his theories, this is a surprisingly entertaining piece. It is a fine lesson in wisdom, humility, betrayal, loyalty and love in that specific order. Not for the usual “popcorn going” crowd (who expect wall to wall action and multi—billion dollar CGI), this is more of the subtle variety opting for gorgeous visual shots only topped by a fine story. The lead role which is played by actor Chow Yun Fat (of “hard-boiled” and “killer” fame) is a strange choice as to many he is linked with ultra-violence and hard-core ballistic action but after watching this movie one does realise what a brilliant and powerful actor he is. After watching this film I was left with mixed emotions; some of the scenes have the effect of leaving the viewer with a lump in his throat and some are just...meh. Bottom line I would say that if you don't have an interest in Confucius or history in general then most probably you will not enjoy this so give it a miss but if you are a history buff the give it a viewing. However, I don't think this can be given repeated viewings so best go for rental. If all else fails; watch it for the acting of Chow Yun Fat...an incredible an powerful actor.
