Election volume 1 review

When I started watching this film I thought it was a poor attempt at an underground gangster film but around the 11 minutes mark I really started to appreciate the story. A completely different kind of film that we have come to expect from Hong Kong directors (no wire-work kung fu here) but a really good film in its own right. Hard hitting and brutal...entirely raw film making with a twist ending; I enjoyed it minus the first few minutes. Reading the short description at the back (which I do after watching), I wouldn't go as far as to say that it is on par with "the godfather" rather would say that it is a pinnacle of Hong Kong cinema. It took me two viewings to fully understand the story as it was so complex but it was worth it. If you do want to watch this...do not read anything about it and go into it unprepared and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Cant wait to track down the sequel to watch so expect a review on that soon. Hope the sequel is as good as this if not better and doesn't go down the path of disappointments like the majority of sequels. Here's hoping and fingers (and toes) crossed.
