The martian review

The phrase "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" (wonder where that's from?) comes to mind. However, this very interesting but still far fetched film totally ignores that saying and goes in the complete opposite direction. Leaving out a pivotal train of thought about this film and being neutral in reviewing this, I have to say that the thought of a manned mission to Mars would be quite an achievement (even if it is fiction at this point) and a film about said mission would sell tickets by the bucket loads. Put a popular director behind the film and it becomes even more feasible and becomes a box-office smash (or runaway smash...only time will tell). I am a great fan of director Ridley Scott's films from "alien" onwards. The pacing of this film is just right; neither rushed or too slow and the cast list is spot on. Normally I find actor Matt Damon a bit dry but I have to say that he gives an Oscar worthy performance here. The trend of survival films is strong and noticeably more so with the blockbusters "gravity" and "interstellar". This also is a realistic sci-fi survival film set on Mars but to be perfectly honest:  it's nothing that hasn't been done in various movies before just set on a different landscape. An entertaining watch and a message of political, racial and international collaboration to achieve one goal. Worth watching...once.
